“These typographic maps by Axis Maps take locating a destination to a whole new level. Each map accurately shows the location of streets and highways, parks, neighborhoods, coastlines, and other features of each city using only words. To create these impressive maps, every single letter and word was manually placed, taking hundreds of hours to complete each map.”

“We were recently asked to create an opening for an extreme sports show, based in New York and surrounding areas. Our client wanted us to capture the energy of the city culture and action of the sport.”

Inspired by a pop-up map of New York, Grand Central is a table with a decent-sized round top, which folds down into a much smaller occasional table. The expandable table is composed of 22 pieces that work together to unfold like a map to rest on a frame that folds out as well.

When you ignore some of the UI elements, the sometimes prolonged waiting time, and the occasional crashes, Bing Destination Maps [bing.com] seems quite interesting as a new way of rendering geographical maps in a more visually simplified, understandable and accessible way. In other words, imagine one can now create a sort of information-optimized summary maps, similar to those you would quickly draw yourself on the back of napkin.
Users are able to specify a specific location, set the area of interest by dragging the sides of the on-map square, and provide the map with a title. The ‘cool’ feature allows the selection of a visual map style such as ‘Sketchy’, ‘European’, ‘American’ or ‘Treasure’ (think about the favorite activity of pirates).

When Janelli & Volpi launched a contest to find the best new wallpaper designs, the search was on for wallcoverings suitable for a hotel or bed & breakfast. The five winners were recently announced, and four out of five used tourism as the theme. The fifth opted for a design involving millions of ants. The other choices were designs that paired Google Earth and the Vatican; depicted iconic tourist information; imitated a guestbook; and made use of stylized city maps. Above we have Perception by Blanche Steigel and Daniela Peterman.
